What is RF power conversion?

Just like converting miles to kilometers, RF engineers convert between different ways of describing the same power. dBm, watts, and volts all describe how strong a signal is — just in different units that suit different situations.

Why does this matter?

When your phone's WiFi specification says "20 dBm transmit power," that's just 100 milliwatts — less than a dim night light. The dBm scale makes it easy to work with both tiny receiver signals (−100 dBm) and large transmitter powers (40 dBm) without writing lots of zeros.
